Victorian & Edwardian Gallery |
From the 1860’s when photographic portraiture was first available on a commercial basis, people were always fascinated with having their ‘likeness’ taken. It became the new thing to do, dress in your Sunday best and go along to the nearest photographer with all your family for a portrait. During those days it was a very serious thing to do and smiling was not allowed. It was not only not allowed, it was not possible as the subjects had to remain absolutely still for around five minutes while the cameraman did his stuff (and no-one can keep a smile for that length of time). Subjects in this photo Gallery range from the very severe, straight up and down Victorian style dresses to the much more elaborate Edwardian ball gowns. Click on the photos to view a larger image. |
